Ghostly Labor

“By the end of 90 ear-teasing, hip-shaking minutes, two things were clear. First, La Mezcla artistic director and choreographer Vanessa Sanchez ranks among the most singular dance artists to emerge from San Francisco in decades. Second, this defiantly joyous production deserves to be seen across the country… La Mezcla’s ‘Ghostly Labor’ explores labor history through expressions of resistance and joy.

– Rachel Howard, SF Chronicle

“Ghostly Labor” explores the history of labor in the US–Mexico borderlands through Tap Dance, Mexican Zapateado, Son Jarocho, Afro Caribbean movement, and live music. This work brings together polyrhythmic movement and an original score to look at the (ongoing) years of systemic exploitation of labor while highlighting the power and joy of collective resistance. The full-length dance theater production of Ghostly Labor premiered at Brava Theater in December 2023 and will tour internationally throughout 2024-2025.

Ghostly Labor is available for in-person presentations, virtual screenings, community engagement excerpts, lecture-demos, residencies, talks and lectures, dance workshops and master classes. For more info about performances and company activities, please email LaMezclaSF@gmail.com.
